This Week
No. 1 California squares off against No. 6 Stanford in The Big Row on Saturday, May 1, at Redwood Shores in the regular season finale. Races will begin at 9 a.m. The Cardinal topped the Golden Bears last season for the first time since 2002.

Bears Split with Washington, Keep Simpson Cup
At last weekend's dual against Washington at Redwood Shores, Cal split the four races against the Huskies, however, one of the victories for the Bears came in the varsity 8+ race for the Simpson Cup. Cal has now won the Simpson Cup for the last seven consecutive years. The second varsity 8+ was the other boat for the Bears to be victorious.
The varsity 8+ remained undefeated this season with its victory over the Huskies, 6:17.4-6:20.9. Cal held a slight lead after 500m and moved to a length lead by the midway point. Washington was able to keep the margin at a length, but was unable to move back in the Cal lead. The second varsity 8+ topped the Huskies, 6:46.1-6:50.7.

Last Year Against Stanford
Cal's novice 8+ won against its Stanford counterpart, 7:10.04-7:25.30, but the Bears lost four of five races overall to the rival Cardinal in the 2009 Big Row. Cal's varsity 8+ lost the first race of the day to the Stanford varsity 8+, 6:25.6-6:29.5. Stanford's lightweight 8+ went on to defeat Cal's third varsity 8+, 6:58.9-7:06.9, and then the Cardinal's varsity 4+ also topped the Bears, 7:37.66-7:39.25. Stanford's second varsity 8+ beat Cal, 6:42.5-6:46.5, before Cal avoided the sweep by winning the novice race.

A Look at the Cal-Stanford Rivalry
Since 1976, Cal holds the all-time series lead over Stanford, 23-11, but Stanford snapped a six-year losing streak with last year's victory. Since 1997, the Bears have defeated Stanford every year except 2002 and 2009. Cal also opened the series winning five of the first six competitions.

In the Rankings
Cal held on to its No. 1 national ranking in this week's USRowing Coaches poll. This week's opponent, Stanford, comes in at No. 6.
