Thompson Named Top Setter In Puerto Rico League
April 28, 2010
CATAÑO, Puerto Rico - Former Honda Award winner Courtney Thompson has been enjoying a fantastic season piloting the Cataño Lancheras into the semifinals of the Puerto Rico Superliga. On the eve of the semifinals of the league's playoffs, Thompson was named Setter of the Year.
Cataño has advanced to the semis thanks in large part to the efforts of Thompson and her former Husky friend, teammate, and National Champion Christal Morrison who joined the squad late in the year. 2009 UW grad Airial Salvo has also had a stellar season in her first pro experience.
The Lancheras currently hold a 1-0 lead in the best of seven semifinal series against Toa Baja, which won the regular season title losing only once in its season-opener, to Cataño once again. Toa Baja features U.S. Olympian Jen Joines Tamas and U.S. Team Member Cassie Busse.
Cataño won the semifinal opener on the road in three sets as Thompson set the Lancheras with seven assists and 12 digs. Salvo claimed 14 points with 13 kills and a block. Morrison added nine points in the win.
Thompson also made the Superliga's All-Star team, and won MVP honors in the All-Star game itself.
The team's official release on the awards states, 'Many consider that Thompson is the key to the Lancheras, the surprise of the League in the regular season which has already advanced to the semi-finals.'
