Baseball In The Pros: An Early Look

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team has one month remaining in its regular season, but for former Beavers who now dot the rosters of professional clubs, their seasons are just beginning.

The Beavers currently have three former players dot the rosters of Major League clubs - Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian Barden and Cole Gillespie - and have a good number in the Minor Leagues.

Here's a look at how some of OSU's former players have done thus far. Stats are as of Tuesday night's games.

Andy Baldwin (Seattle Mariners) - Baldwin has made seven appearances for the Class-AAA Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League, starting one, and has an ERA of 4.32 with a 1-1 record. He has nine strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings.

Brian Barden (Florida Marlins) - Barden is in his first season with Florida, and is 1-for-8 in 13 games this season. He's also drawn two walks.

Darwin Barney (Chicago Cubs) - Barney is playing for the Class-AAA Iowa Cubs in the International League, and has played in 24 games thus far, batting .280. He has three doubles, a triple and seven RBI.

Dallas Buck (Cincinnati Reds) - Buck has thrown in five games, all starts, for the Carolina Mudcats of the Double-A Southern League. He is 2-3 on the year with a 6.29 ERA in 24 1/3 innings.

Mitch Canham (San Diego Padres) - Canham is with the Class-AA San Antonio Missions in the Texas League, and is batting .242 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and 10 RBI in 20 games.

Mike Ekstrom (Tampa Bay Rays) - Ekstrom is with the Class-AAA Durham Bulls of the International League, and is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in three appearances, all in relief. He began the season with the Rays and threw in six games, posting a 0-1 record and 8.53 ERA in 6 1/3 innings.

Jacoby Ellsbury (Boston Red Sox) - Ellsbury has played in six games for Boston this season, having played last on April 11 due to injury. He is 10-for-30 this season with four doubles, an RBI and a stolen base.

Cole Gillespie (Arizona Diamondbacks) - Gillespie was called up to Arizona on April 21 and made his MLB debut that night, doubling in his first career at bat. He is currently batting .296 in 12 games for the Diamondbacks, collecting five doubles and two RBI in 27 at bats. Prior to his promotion, he had been with the Reno Aces of the Class-AAA Pacific Coast League, where he was batting .283 in 12 games.

Tyler Graham (San Francisco Giants) - Graham is a teammate of Daniel Turpen's with Class-AA Richmond, and is batting .125 in two games with the Flying Squirrels.

Chris Hopkins (Toronto Blue Jays) - Hopkins is currently with the Lansing Lugnuts with the Class-A Midwest League, and has played in 10 games, batting .240 with two doubles, three RBI and four stolen bases.

Andy Jenkins (Texas Rangers) - Jenkins is currently with Class-AA Frisco of the Texas League, and is batting .267 with two doubles and two home runs in seven games. He started the season with Class-AAA Oklahoma City in the Pacific Coast League, and batted .326 in 12 games with the club.

Eddie Kunz (New York Mets) - Kunz is with the Double-A Binghamton Mets in the Eastern League, and has made five starts. He is 2-2 with a 6.94 ERA in 23 1/3 innings of work.

Jordan Lennerton (Detroit Tigers) - Lennerton has played in 24 games for the Class-A West Michigan Whitecaps of the Midwest League. He is batting .262 with three doubles, three home runs and nine RBI.

Aaron Mathews (Toronto Blue Jays) - Mathews has played in 10 games for Class-AAA Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League, and is hitting .310 with a double, home run and two RBI.

Ryan Ortiz (Oakland Athletics) - Has appeared in 14 games for the Stockton Ports of the Class-A California League. Ryan is batting .214 with three doubles, a home run and eight RBI. He has also walked nine times.

Joe Paterson (San Francisco Giants) - Paterson has made one appearance for San Jose of the Class-A California League and earlier in the year, went 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in nine appearances for Class-AAA Fresno.

Daniel Robertson (San Diego Padres) - Robertson is with the Lake Elsinore Storm of the Class-A California League, and is batting .344 in 26 games. He has two doubles, four triples, two home runs and 12 RBI to go along with five stolen bases.

Jorge Reyes (San Diego Padres) - Reyes has made six appearances for Lake Elsinore of the Class-A California League, including five starts. He is 2-2 with a 6.35 ERA in 22 2/3 innings, striking out 23.

Mike Stutes (Philadelphia Phillies - Stutes has made nine appearances, all in relief, for the Reading Phillies of the Class-AA Eastern League. He is 2-0 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 innings. He has two saves and seven strikeouts while opponents are batting .163 against him.

Daniel Turpen (San Francisco Giants) - Turpen is with the Class-AA Richmond Flying Squirrels in the Eastern League, and has made eight appearances, all in relief. He is 2-1 with a 4.26 ERA in 12 2/3 innings, collecting a save along the way.

Joey Wong (Colorado Rockies) - Has played in four games for the Asheville Tourists of the Class-A South Atlantic League. He has five hits in 10 at bats, including a double.
