Women's Soccer Spring Season Wraps Up This Week

May 5, 2010

SEATTLE - The next set of spring games for the UW women's soccer team netted split results: a 1-0 win over cross-town rival Seattle University at Starfire Sports Complex last Friday, and a 2-1 loss to Pac-10 foe Oregon less than twenty-four hours later at Husky Soccer Field.

'The timing of the games wasn't ideal, nor is it an excuse for our performance,' Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said. 'We played okay in game one versus Seattle U. Both of our goalkeepers did a fine job, and Kari Davidson, specifically, came up with a very big save in the first half. Sarah Martinez scored a tremendous goal off a quick central combination and almost netted a second off a header that she headed down, as you should when trying to score, but it bounced so hard off the turf that it came up and hit the crossbar and rebounded out. That was a little unfortunate. We created some good chances and had a solid defensive effort in that game.

'The Oregon game was a different story,' Gallimore continued. 'I felt we were lackadaisical from the get-go and Jorde LaFontaine-Kussmann did well to keep the Ducks out of our net in the first half. We had good intentions with what we were trying to do from a possession and attacking stand-point, but overall we weren't sharp or crisp with the ball and played very tentatively. Oregon, on the other hand, looked very sharp and focused and it paid off for them in the second half with two goals, one a tremendous strike from distance that found the upper corner.'

There was a slight scare in the first half when junior captain and defensive stalwart, Kendyl Pele, collided in the air with one of the Ducks players. She sustained a severe gash under her right eye and was removed from the game and headed to the eye specialist to have it sewn up. Fortunately she will be fine to play the remainder of the spring.

'There is definitely a difference in our team without Kendyl in the lineup,' Gallimore said. 'Louise Albin is a very good back but has played a limited amount this spring because of lingering symptoms from mononucleosis. I was going to let Louise play a little bit and then make the switch to put Kate Deines back at central defense but I wasn't able to make the substitution before Oregon notched their first goal, unfortunately.'

The Huskies battled even when down 2-0, and drew within a goal when Alex Webber was downed in the box for a penalty kick. Deines converted the kick to make it 2-1. Alex Webber had the two closest opportunities to score in the game, but Oregon keeper Cody Miles did well to thwart both breakaways with solid saves.

The Dawgs close out the spring season with their last match this Thursday at 7 p.m. versus the Seattle Sounders women's team at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila. The game will be broadcast for free on Comcast On Demand.

The Huskies begin their 2010 campaign at Seattle University of August 20. Below is the Huskies 2010 schedule.
