Bates and Bruins Walk Off With Thrilling Win Over California
May 8, 2010
LOS ANGELES - One out away from being no-hit, the Bruins rallied with two outs, as freshman B.B. Bates hit a three-run, walk-off homer to give fifth-ranked UCLA a 3-1 victory over #13 California on Saturday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins win their 11th in a row to improve to 38-9 overall and 12-5 in Pac-10 play, while the Golden Bears fall to 37-17 and 6-11 in league action.
UCLA was held without a hit for 6 2/3 innings until coming through with two down in the bottom of the seventh. Senior Julie Burney ended Jolene Henderson's no-hit bid with a double to center and senior Kaila Shull extended the inning with a walk on a 3-2 pitch. That brought up Bates, who fouled off the first pitch and then took a ball before hitting her third home run of the season to left-center to send the Bruins into a massive celebration at home plate.
Senior Megan Langenfeld earned the victory to improve to 8-1 on the season, striking out one and allowing just two hits in 5 2/3 shutout innings. Langenfeld retired the final 11 batters she faced, setting down the side in order in the third, fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
The Golden Bears struck first with a run in the second. Taylor Kelly led off with a walk and came home on a double to left-center by Vernae Sevilla to put California up 1-0.
Henderson ended up striking out eight, allowing three runs, two hits and five walks in 6 2/3 innings.
The Bruins and the Golden Bears wrap up their three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Easton Stadium. UCLA will honor its senior class in pre-game festivities. Gametracker and live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com.
