Beavers Win In The 11th On A Wild Pitch
May 8, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Joey Housey uncorked a wild pitch with two outs in the 11th, enabling Ryan Barnes to score from third and give the Oregon State baseball team a 4-3 victory over No. 15 Oregon Saturday in front a season-best 3,059 fans at Goss Stadium.
The win upped Oregon State's record to 23-17 (6-11 Pacific-10 Conference) and gave the Beavers a series victory over the Ducks after winning 2-1 in 10 innings Friday night.
'We will take that win for sure,' head coach Pat Casey said. 'We should have won in nine, but it doesn't matter how long it takes. The key is to now end the series on a high note Sunday.'
Andrew Susac opened the 11th with a single, and was immediately pinch run for by Barnes. He moved to second on a single by Rob Folsom, then went to third when Tyler Smith reached on a throwing error by Housey, who had come in prior to the at bat for Alex Keudell.
Carter Bell then struck out swinging, but it did not matter as Housey's wild pitch on the first pitch to Adalberto Santos. That gave OSU the win and sent Keudell to the loss, which dropped him to 4-5 on the year.
The win went to Matt Boyd, who threw two full innings of relief. He allowed a hit and a walk but stranded Oregon runners in both the 10th and 11th innings to improve to 5-1 this season.
Stefen Romero made it 2-0 in favor of the Beavers with a two-run home run in the first, his 11th of the year. It scored Santos and came off Justin LaTempa, who went seven innings and allowed four hits but did not get the decision.
LaTempa allowed another run in the third. Santos scored his first run of the game on a wild pitch. That put the Beavers up 3-0, but Oregon managed to tie the game in the ninth.
Nick Wagner pinch hit and singled to center for the Ducks' first run of the game. Danny Pulfer then singled off Kevin Rhoderick, who had come in two batters earlier for Kraig Sitton. Down 3-2, and with a 3-2 count, Jack Marder tripled over Santos' head in center to tie the game.
Tanner Robles started for Oregon State and went 3 2/3 innings, allowing two hits and two walks before being replaced by Tyler Waldron in the fourth. Waldron worked four scoreless innings, scattering five hits. He did not walk a batter nor did he strike one out.
Romero's first-inning home run extended his hit streak to eight games and he went 1-for-2. Santos led the Beavers with two hits.
Pulfer, Marder, Eddie Rodriguez and Paul Eshleman all finished with two hits apiece for the Ducks, who dropped to 30-17 overall and 10-10 in league play. Oregon finished the game with 13 hits off five Oregon State pitchers.
The Ducks also committed two errors, which led to two unearned runs.
The clubs finish the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. Oregon State is scheduled to throw right-hander Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 6.23) and the Beavers will go against Oregon right-hander Zack Thornton (7-0, 2.87).
