Cougars in Scoring Positions After First Day at Pac-10 Combined Events Championships

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Three Washington State track and field competitors are in scoring positions after the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon competition Saturday at the Pacific-10 Conference Combined Events Championships Meet at Edwards Stadium/Goldman Field in Berkeley.
In the women's heptathlon, Angela Jensen (junior, Tacoma) is in sixth place with a lifetime-best first day total of 3,055 points, just two points out of fifth place, and Jasmine Johnson-McKeown (freshman, San Bernardino) is in seventh place with a PR total of 3,022 points. Oregon's Brianne Theisen is in the lead with 3,600 points.
Jensen opened the competition with a huge PR in the 100m hurdles, running a time of 13.89 seconds, knocking 17/100s second off her previous lifetime best time of 14.06. She high jumped 5-feet, 2 1/4 inches (1.58m), threw the shot put 29-10 1/4 (9.10m), and ran the 200m in a PR time of 25.10.
Johnson-McKeown opened with a 100m hurdles time of 15.72 seconds, and cleared 5-3 1/4 (1.61m) in the high jump, threw the shot put a distance of 38-9 3/4 (11.83m), and ran the 200m in a time of 25.12.
Kyle Schauble (senior, Kennewick) is in eighth place with 3,436 points after the first day of the decathlon. Ramsey Hopkins (freshman, San Diego) dropped out of the competition after the high jump Saturday. Oregon's Ashton Eaton leads the decathlon with 4,220 points.
Schauble ran a 100m dash time of 11.19, long jumped 20-7 (6.27m) and threw the shot put a PR distance of 35-10 1/2 (10.93m). He cleared 5-10 1/2 (1.79m) in the high jump and ran a 400m dash time of 50.11.
Hopkins ran the 100m in 11.69, long jumped 21-5 1/4 (6.53m), threw the shot put 32-0 (9.75m), cleared 6-4 1/4 (1.94m) in the high jump but did not run the 400m dash. On his third attempt in the high jump he injured his hamstring and could not continue in the competition.
The multi-events competition resumes Sunday morning in Berkeley.
