USC Completes Sweep Over Utah, 11-6

May 9, 2010

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Roundtree went 3-for-4 with a key two-run single in the third Sunday as the USC Trojans completed a non-conference sweep over the Utah Utes with the 11-6 victory at Dedeaux Field. It was USC's first series sweep on the season as the Trojans have won six of their last seven games.

Chad Smith (4-5) threw 4 1/3 innings in relief for USC (23-24) and gave up just one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Mike O'Neill improved his season-high hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-for-5 at the plate with two doubles.

Gavin Green was 3-for-6 with a triple for Utah (19-24) while Nik Gumeson was 3-for-5 on the afternoon. The Utes recorded 14 hits in the game, but stranded 13 runners on base and the bases loaded in the first and second innings.

Green opened the game with a triple to right center off USC starter Logan Odom and scored when Ryan Bast's throw sailed out of play to bring home the run. With the bases loaded, Odom then struck out Jo Jo Sharrar and Mark Moorman and got Rick Cornu to ground out to end the threat. O'Neill led off the bottom half with a double and scored on back-to-back fly balls from Joe De Pinto and Ricky Oropesa.

Utah scored two runs in the second with two outs on an RBI double by Nick Kuroczko and RBI single from C.J. Cron. Down 4-2 in the third, the Trojans scored four runs to take the lead for good after Roundtree snapped the 4-4 tie with his two-run single to center for the 6-4 advantage.

Sharrar brought Utah within one on his RBI single in the sixth, but Oropesa answered with his 13th homer of the season in the seventh, sending a solo blast to right. Oropesa now has 26 career home runs, six away from breaking into USC's career top ten list. Utah scored again in the eighth, but De Pinto hit a three-run homer to left as the Trojans put four more runs on the board to secure the victory.

USC hosts Long Beach State on Wednesday (May 12) at 7:15 p.m. before traveling to UCLA next weekend for a Pac-10 Conference series. All four games will be broadcast live on with a video webcast for the Long Beach State game.
