Cal to Play at NCAA San Diego Regional

INDIANAPOLIS - The Cal men's golf squad team was selected Monday to play in the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships and will be one of 13 teams beginning postseason play at the NCAA San Diego Regional hosted by San Diego State May 20-22 at the par-72, 7,360-yard Carlton Oaks Golf Club in Santee, Calif. The regional will also feature 10 individuals not from an NCAA qualifying team.
The top five teams and the low individual not from one of those five teams from each of six regionals across the nation will advance to the 30-team field for the NCAA finals June 1-6 at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is the host institution for this year's championships.Oregon is the top seed at the San Diego NCAA Regional and followed by UNLV, Augusta State, Tennessee, San Diego State, Cal, Tennessee at Chattanooga, Central Florida, Arizona, UC Irvine, Missouri, New Mexico State and Oral Roberts.
'When I look at the teams above us and behind us, I think we've got as good of a shot as anybody to advance,' said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. 'We're all starting from scratch, so let's go play.'
Cal is playing in an NCAA regional for the fourth consecutive season and the 15th time in school history. The Bears have made five trips to the NCAA Championships, most recently in 2004 when Cal won its first and only national title in men's golf.The Golden Bears head into the 2009-10 post-season ranked No. 29 in the nation by GolfWeek and No. 34 according to GolfStat. Cal finished tied for sixth in its most recent action at the 2010 Pac-10 Men's Golf Championship as Eric Mina won medalist honors to become only the second player in Cal men's golf history, and the first since Charlie Wi in 1995, to capture the Pac-10 individual crown in the 51-year history of the event. Cal tied a school-record with three regular-season team victories, winning the Spartan Golf Classic, Alister MacKenzie Invitational and Arizona Intercollegiate.

The 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships feature a total of 81 teams and 60 individuals not from those teams taking part in six 54-hole regional tournaments May 20-22. The other five regionals are being hosted by Georgia Tech (Capital City Club - Alpharetta, GA), Notre Dame (The Warren Golf Course - Notre Dame, IN), Texas A&M (Traditions Club - College Station, TX), Washington (Gold Mountain Golf Club - Bremerton, WA) and Yale (The Course at Yale - New Haven, CT).
