Long Beach State Takes 9-1 Win At USC
May 12, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Long Beach State scored five runs in the seventh on three USC errors as the Dirtbags defeated the host Trojans, 9-1, in a non-conference game Wednesday at Dedeaux Field. Nate Underwood threw four scoreless innings in the designated to earn the win for the Dirtbags.
Long Beach State improved to 22-23 on the season while USC saw its season-high four-game winning streak snapped to fall to 23-25 overall.
Five Dirtbag players recorded two hits in the game as Kirk Singer and Steve Tinoco had two RBI each. Underwood allowed only one hit in his start as the Long Beach State staff combined to allow just four hits in the game.
Jonathan Jones hit a fly ball down the left field line that bounced fair for a one-out double in the second for the Dirtbags. Singer then singled to center, giving Long Beach State a 1-0 lead.
Keith Castillo led off the USC fifth with a double to right center off reliever Tommy Nance. Kevin Roundtree then sacrificed Castillo to third, but Adam Landecker chopped a ball to a drawn-in infield as Matt Duffy was able to throw out Castillo at the plate.
Tinoco's sacrifice fly in the sixth gave Long Beach State the 2-0 advantage, but Mike O'Neill hit his second homer of the season with a solo shot in the bottom half of the inning for what turned out to be the Trojans' lone run in the game. O'Neill went 2-for-4 with one RBI to extend his season-high hitting streak to 11 games.
Jordan Casas walked to lead off the seventh and Duffy laid down a bunt on the first base side, but Ricky Oropesa's throw to first went wide of the bag as Casas scored and Duffy advanced to third. TJ Mittelstaedt then singled to right for the second run of the inning. Tinoco later hit a chopper that was misplayed by USC second baseman Ryan Bast, rolling to the fence as two more runs scored for the Dirtbags. The final run came on Tre Dennis' RBI single to left with Long Beach State adding two more runs in the ninth for the win.
