Stanford Men And Women Prepare For Pac-10 Rowing Championships

    STANFORD, Calif. - Stanford men's and women's rowing will head to Lake Natoma this weekend for the Pac-10 Championships, set to be held Sunday, May 16. Last year the women finished second in the team standings but the I Eight claimed its first gold medal since 2003, while the men's I Eight took home the silver medal and the team finished third overall.

    The Cardinal women enter the conference championships ranked fifth in the USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association Division I Varsity Eight Poll, while the men's I Eight is ranked No. 13.

    The event will begin Sunday morning with the Men's Frosh/Novice Eight Grand Final at 9:30 a.m., followed by the women's Novice Eight Grand Final at 9:50 a.m. Varsity Four action begins at 10:10 a.m., while the II Eights get underway at 10:50 a.m. and the I Eights begin their Grand Finals at 11:30 a.m.

    The Cardinal women claimed second in the team competition at last year's Pac-10 Championships, while the I Eight set the new Lake Natoma course record with a blazing 6:18.6 to claim gold in the Grand Final. This year, Stanford, the defending NCAA Champion, last saw the main body of Pac-10 rivals at Lake Natoma in mid-April, finishing second in a final group behind California but ahead of Washington State.

    On the men's side, the Cardinal defeated the I Eight from Oregon State in its last action back on May 2 at Redwood Shores. A day before, the Cardinal fell in a hard race against California, while the Frosh Eight claimed victory over Oregon State at Redwood Shores on April 18. Last year, the men's I Eight surged ahead of top-ranked Washington to claim second place in the Grand Final behind California.
