#2 Baseball Earns 12-4 Win Over Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 2 Arizona State University baseball team used a well-rounded offensive attack to defeat No. 25 Arizona 12-4 on Friday at Sancet Stadium in Tucson. The Sun Devils improve to 42-5 overall, 15-4 in the Pac-10, with the victory in the opener of the three-game series.

Riccio Torrez and Deven Marrero had three hits each, while Kole Calhoun and Torrez each drove in three runs apiece. Calhoun, on the day he graduated from ASU, hit his team-leading 10th home run, and Zack MacPhee tied a 39-year-old school record with his 13th triple of the season in the win. Austin Barnes collected two doubles and two RBI in the victory as well.

Seth Blair earned the win on the mound to improve to 9-0 on the season. He went six innings, allowing nine hits and four runs with six strikeouts. Mitchell Lambson pitched two shutout innings of relief, not allowing a hit, and Jake Barrett pitched a scoreless ninth to cap off the win.

Arizona took the lead with two runs in the second, but ASU answered right back in the top of the third. Marrero led off the inning with a double down the right field line, and Matt Newman then brought him home with a double to left center. Newman then scored the tying run on a groundout by Drew Maggi. The Sun Devils then took the lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Raoul Torrez.

MacPhee and Riccio Torrez both had RBI doubles in the fifth to make it 5-2, but Arizona got back within a run in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run shot by Rafael Valenzuela. The Wildcats then put runners on the corners with two outs in the fifth, but Blair struck out Robert Refnsyder to end the inning.

Barnes then came through with a two-run double in the sixth to get the lead back to three, and then Calhoun hit a two-run homer in the seventh to make it 9-4. ASU then added three more in the eighth on a bases loaded walk by Calhoun and a two-run single by Riccio Torrez.

The Sun Devils continue their series with the Wildcats on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. at Sancet Stadium in Tucson.
