James Wise Pitches Cougars Past Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. - Junior James Wise fired eight shutout innings to lead Washington State past No. 25 Stanford 4-2 in Pacific-10 Conference baseball, Saturday.

With the victory, the Cougars (27-18, 10-10 Pac-10) even the three-game series and pulled back within a game of Stanford (27-19, 11-9 Pac-10) in the conference standings.

'James Wise pitched his best game since he arrived on campus,' WSU Head Coach said. 'We needed a great effort from our starting pitcher today and James gave us exactly that.'

The eight innings were a career high for Wise (2-1) and he fanned a career-high eight hitters. He allowed four hits and only two runners past first base.

Wise added, 'I felt like I had good command of all my pitches. Ponce (WSU catcher Jay Ponciano) called a great game. I think I shook him off once all day.'

Washington State began the scoring in the third when Cody Bartlett walked to open the frame and Matt Fanelli his fifth home run of the season one out later off Jordan Pries (3-3).

The Cougars added a run in the fourth on a one-out triple by Ponciano and a two-out single by Bartlett. Ponciano increased the lead to 4-0 with a home run leading off the sixth.

Seth Harvey relieved Wise to begin the bottom of the ninth, but was lifted after giving up a single and a walk. Paris Shewey gave up a pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice fly and Stanford was within 4-2 with runners at first and second and one out. Adam Conley gave up a single to load the bases, and then induced Adam Gaylord to ground into a 4-6-3 game-ending double play for his 10th save

The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

Adam Conley moved into a tie for second on the WSU single-season list for saves with 10 and into a tie for third all-time with 11...Jay Ponciano's home run in the sixth inning was his first since May 24, 2009 against Washington...Cougars defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the 10th time this season.
