Box Score

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Jacob Clem went eight innings in relief and a bases-loaded, two-out walk to Jacob Lamb in the eighth broke a 2-2 tie as the Washington baseball team beat Oregon State, 3-2, Sunday at Goss Stadium.

Washington (26-24 overall and 9-12 in the Pac-10) broke a five-game losing streak and avoided an OSU sweep with the win while the Beavers dropped to 26-19 and 9-12 in the league.

After coming on to begin the second inning, Clem (3-3) allowed two runs in that first frame, but then held the Beavers scoreless from the third inning on. He ended up with the longest outing of his career, giving up two runs on six hits.

OSU starter Sam Gaviglio (2-3) suffered the loss despite a solid outing. He gave up three runs on five hits over seven and two-thirds innings. Gaviglio left the game with a runner at second and two outs in the eighth, only to see the next three Husky batters draw walks after his departure.

OSU scored the first runs of the game in the second inning. With Jared Norris and Rob Folsom on at the corners and one out, catcher Andrew Susac doubled to left-center, driving in both runners to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Washington got one of those runs back with a two-out rally. With two down and none on, Julien Pollard and Eric Peterson singled to put two on for Doug Cherry, who was able to cut the OSU lead to 2-1 with an RBI single.

In the fourth, the Huskies drew even as Caleb Brown's fielder's choice groundout with runners at the corners brought home a run to knot the score at 2-2.

Both teams were held scoreless through the middle innings until the Huskies finally broke the tie in the eighth.

The inning opened with Peterson being hit by a pitch. After a bunt was popped up in foul ground for one out and another bunt moved pinch runner Andy Smith to second, OSU reliever Kraig Sitton came on for Gaviglio. Troy Scott and Pierce Rankin drew walks to load the bases and then Lamb earned a free pass to force in Smith, giving the UW the 3-2 lead.

Washington returns to Seattle next weekend to close out the home slate with a three-game series vs. Oregon. Both the Saturday and Sunday games vs. the Ducks will air live on television on Comcast SportsNet.
