Men's Tennis Falls to UCLA in NCAA Second-Round Match

May 16, 2010

LOS ANGELES - The No. 17-ranked California men's tennis team (13-8, 3-3 Pac-10) concluded its dual season on a 4-0 defeat to No. 9 UCLA (16-6, 4-2 Pac-10) in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships at the Los Angeles Tennis Center, on Sunday, May 16. The Golden Bears were eliminated while making their 10th appearance in the second round under the direction of head coach Peter Wright.

The Bruins seized the doubles point by claiming a victory on the second court. UCLA struck first with an 8-1 win on the top court by No. 16-ranked Amit Inbar and Nick Meister. The pair defeated Cal's No. 30-ranked duo of juniors Jonathan Dahan and Pedro Zerbini to take the upper hand but the Bears responded as junior Bozhidar Katsarov and sophomore Sky Lovill earned an 8-3 win over Alex Brigham and Holden Seguso on court three. With the doubles point up for grabs on court two, UCLA's tandem of Haythem Abid and Matt Brooklyn took the final two games of their match to post a 9-7 win over Cal's No. 67-ranked team of sophomore Nick Andrews and freshman Christoffer Konigsfeldt.

UCLA capitalized on the momentum it had gained from taking the first point as the Bruins took wins in the first set on all six singles courts. No. 58-ranked Brooklyn brought UCLA's advantage to 2-0 as he defeated Andrews, 6-1, 6-0, on court three. On the adjacent court, Konigsfeldt was dealt a 6-3, 6-2 loss by No. 51-ranked Abid at No. 2 singles to put the Bears behind by three points.

On court five, Katsarov rebounded from a 6-1 loss to Seguso in the first set to split his match with a 6-4 win in the second and had taken a 1-0 lead in the third set. Meanwhile, at the top court, 18th-ranked Zerbini was on track to do the same with a 5-2 lead in the second set after surrendering a 6-3 loss to No. 71 Meister in the first. But the Bears were not able to put points on the board as Maxime Tabatruong took out freshman Riki McLachlan by a 6-2, 6-3 count on court six. With the final outcome decided, Zerbini and Katsarov's matches were abandoned along with Dahan's match against Inbar on the fourth singles court.

Dahan and Zerbini will join forces to take on the field of 32 at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Doubles Championship and Zerbini will fly solo to face the singles field of 64 beginning on Wednesday, May 26, at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of host University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.
