NCAA Rematch Highlights Stanford Soccer Schedule

May 17, 2010

STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford women's soccer team announced its 2010 schedule, which features rematches against teams it played in the four final rounds of the 2009 NCAA tournament and visits from powers Portland and Santa Clara.

A year after completing the best season in school history, Stanford plays a demanding schedule that includes some of its toughest competition on the road. Among them is North Carolina, the only team to beat Stanford last year.

The Cardinal will play the Tar Heels, which beat Stanford 1-0 in the NCAA College Cup final, on Aug. 27 as part of the Carolina Nike Classic. This will be Stanford's second-ever trip to Chapel Hill and first since 1996.

Stanford opens its season at Boston College on Aug. 20, in a rematch of their NCAA quarterfinal match won by the Cardinal at home, 3-1. B.C. should be highly ranked, with U.S. under-20 national-team players Kristie Mewis and Vicki DiMartino.

Stanford's home opener is set for Sept. 10, against Georgia at 7 p.m., as part of the four-team Stanford Nike Invitational. Santa Clara and Pacific are also part of the event, with Stanford playing Pacific on Sept. 12.

Highlights of the home schedule include back-to-back nonconference matches against Portland (Sept. 25) and Santa Clara (Oct. 3). This will be Portland's first visit since Stanford edged the Pilots in overtime in a 2008 NCAA quarterfinal, and marks Santa Clara's return after losing to Stanford on Teresa Noyola's free kick in the third round of the 2009 NCAA tournament.

Stanford's rivalry with UCLA, which was beaten by Christen Press' overtime shot in the NCAA College Cup semifinals last year, will resume in Westwood on Oct. 10. That's just two days after Stanford opens the Pac-10 season against USC, in a night match at the Los Angeles Coliseum.

Based on the 2009 Pac-10 standings, Stanford's toughest home conference test will be its home conference opener against Washington State, the third-place team of a year ago and a team that took the Cardinal into overtime in Pullman, Wash. The Cougars visit Oct. 15 in a 5 p.m. match.
