Verner's Views: Titan Edition
May 18, 2010
It has been a crazy few months for me going through the NFL process. It was long, tedious, and mentally draining. But with all that, it was a fun, once-in-a-lifetime event that I had the pleasure to go through.
Once all the pro days, combines and workouts were done, the only thing to do was wait for the draft. When Thursday, April 22nd, came and they said the Rams were on the clock, my heart started racing, my imagination started going wild as to when I would see my name on the screen.
I had no idea where, but I knew it was going to probably be on Friday or Saturday. I waited anxiously while watching many players go in front of me --- such as BP who went to Tampa Bay in the 2nd. Toby Gerhart to the Vikings, Jahvid Best to the Lions, and others I have played with/or against. It was exciting just for the fact I knew my time would be coming and seeing all these great players go who have worked so hard to reach this point in their careers.
I remember after Friday, I was a little disappointed about no getting picked, but I knew it was all meant for a reason. Then, at 7 am in the morning, the 4th round started. I got the call like 12 minutes into that day and I was talking to Tennessee Titans Coach Fisher and the rest of the group at the 104th pick of the draft. I was super excited and a gigantic weight was released from my shoulders. I finally made it and my family and girlfriend were just ecstatic with what had happened. I was pumping my fist and ran to the counter to get my Titans hat. After that, I was able to sit back and relax and conduct some interviews via phone and get introduced to the media in Tennessee.
Then, the weekend following the draft, I had to report to Rookie mini-camp. I took a flight with Stafon Johnson and Robert Johnson. It was such a long flight, but once we got there I was thinking this will be my new home, for hopefully, a long time. The facilities were so nice and I was just super excited to just be in the locker room. Seeing my practice jersey with the name on the back, the #20 Titan jersey and helmet was almost overwhelming.
The practices and meetings went well, as expected. I did get to do too much since it was just us rookies there, but it was good getting my feet wet again. We were in and out and just used the weekend mostly as an introduction to how the Titans did things. It was definitely way too short of a visit. The coaches are awesome and the rookies were really cool, so I know I am going to enjoy myself. I can't wait to get back out there. On a side note, I would like to send a shout out to the Nashville community which is dealing with the affects of the flooding. I was happy to see the team help out with the relief efforts. Many people lost their homes and much more. So please pray for them out there in their efforts to recover and get back on their feet.
Since I am part of the quarter system at UCLA, I can't report until June while my fellow draft class is already back in Tennessee. So while I am here in LA, I decided to finish up another class, Math 167 - Game Theory, before I go back to Nashville. I can't wait to get my degree, but I have a few more classes to complete before then. But I will definitely get my degree or my mom would kill me. Plus, I really want it too. This opportunity to take another class has allowed me to stay close to the team for a little bit more until I part ways to try and contribute for the Titans this year and represent the Bruins this coming season.
There is a Community Service opportunity approaching that is for a great cause.
