May 18, 2010
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Mary Barnett, a shot putter and state champion discus thrower from Hermiston, Oregon, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend and compete for Washington State University starting in the fall of 2010, Cougar Head Coach Rick Sloan announced Tuesday.
Barnett is a senior at Hermiston High where she has earned nine varsity letters. A versatile athlete, Barnett was a goalie on the soccer team, played center on the basketball team, and a thrower on the track and field team. She was a two-time All-Intermountain Conference second team goalie, and the Bulldogs' basketball team finished fourth in the state tournament this year. As a junior Barnett won the state 5A discus title and finished third in the shot put. Already this season she has broken the school record in the discus, throwing 139-feet, 3 inches. Her best shot put distance is 43-3 1/2.
In addition to her athletics, Barnett is a Umatilla County Scholar Athlete with a 3.89 grade point average and will receive an honors diploma from Hermiston High. She was also the Deca Club president and the yearbook editor.
'I am excited to have Mary in our program and I am really looking forward to working with her next year,' WSU Associate Coach and throws coach Debra Farwell said. 'She will be a great asset to Washington State and add depth to the shot put and discus events. She is a multi-talented athlete that comes from a very athletic family and I think she has huge potential in the throws. We will also look to work with her in the hammer and weight throw in hopes that she will develop in those events too.'
Barnett joins 11 previously announced track and field/cross country signees committing to a Washington State uniform in the 2010-11 school year:
