WILMINGTON, N.C. - Sophomore Margarita Ramos shot a 1-under par round of 71 to lead #7-ranked Arizona into a tie for 12th place after the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championships, Tuesday afternoon at the Country Club of Landfall.
Playing the par-72, 6,368-yard Pete Dye Course, the Wildcats struggled to an opening round total of 296 to finish the day 8-over par as a team, tied with Vanderbilt on the team leaderboard. USC leads the 24-team field at 6-under par while Purdue is two shots off the pace at 4-under.
Ramos started her round in steady fashion, recording par on each of the first eight holes before carding a birdie on the par-4 9th hole. She suffered her first bogey on the 11th hole, but then added birdies on the 13th and 15th before tallying her second bogey of the day on 16. Par scores on each of the final two holes allowed her to finish the day tied for 14th place with four other players.
Freshman Sherlyn Popelka had a roller coaster of a national tournament debut before finishing at 1-over par 73. She began her round in style with a birdie, but then ran into trouble midway through her round. After posting a double-bogey on the par-4 7th hole, she ran into trouble and carded 8 on the par-4 10th hole. However, she bounced back with birdies on four of her final eight holes to finish the day tied for 30th place.
