Five Cal Boats Selected for IRA Regatta
May 19, 2010
BERKELEY - California men's crew will send five boats to compete at the 2010 Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta to be held June 3-5 in Camden, N.J., announced on Wednesday. The varsity 8+, second varsity 8+, novice 8+, varsity 4+ and open 4+ will row at IRAs for the Golden Bears. The winner of the IRA's Varsity Challenge Cup, awarded to the boat that wins the varsity 8+ grand final, is considered the collegiate men's champion. Cal has won 15 IRA championships, most recently in 2006. Last season, the Bears came in second in the varsity 8+.
'It's a testament to our program, and mostly for the student-athletes who have worked hard all season,' head coach Mike Teti said. 'They've performed well in every race. I think it's a testament to the coaching staff, as well. I've had a lot of help from Mike (Vallarelli), Wyatt (Allen), Luke (Agnini) and Pat Hough. It's great for the program. We hope to represent Cal the best we can. We're proud of our program, the alumni and the university.'
Besides Cal, the three other Pac-10 schools competing in the Regatta are top-ranked Washington, Stanford and Oregon State. Washington won the Pac-10 title on May 16, with Cal coming in second to the Huskies in every race and the overall team standings.
In the 2009 IRA Regatta, Cal finished second in the varsity 8+ grand final. Washington won the Varsity Challenge Cup and national title. Cal posted 178 points to finish second behind varsity 8+ champion Washington (198 points) for the Ten Eyck Trophy last season. Brown was third with 174 points. Cal also finished second in the IRA team standings in 2008, when the Bears took third in the varsity 8+ grand final.
