Cal Places Four on Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Region Team
May 20, 2010
BERKELEY - Four Golden Bears can add another highlight to their athletic resume with placement on 2010 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I All-Pacific Team. Junior utility Valerie Arioto, freshman pitcher Jolene Henderson and sophomore outfielder Jamia Reid all made the All-Pacific First Team while senior second baseman Shannon Thomas was selected for the second team.
Reid paces the Bears in hitting - currently batting .383 - and steals with a Pac-10-leading 45 stolen bases.
In addition to slugging .775, Arioto has a team-low 1.31 ERA with a 20-8 overall record.
Henderson, who is 18-9 overall, boasts a 0.66 ERA in nonconference play and 1.63 in her 35 appearances.
With her team-leading 14 sacrifice bunts and 29 steals, good for second on the squad, Thomas is the perfect two-spot hitter.
Last season, Jamia Reid and Arioto also earned All-Pacific-Region honors. Arioto and Reid were recently named to the All-Pac-10 First Team while Henderson was placed on the second team and the All-Freshmen Team. Thomas was lauded as a Pac-10 honorable mention.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
