Additional updates from Athens:

  • After getting underway one hour and 30 minutes behind schedule, Stanford claimed a hard-fought doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. For pretty much the entire doubles competition, all three teams were unable to separate from one another. It appeared as if the Cardinal's top team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette would be the pace-setter up 5-2, but the Tigers tied the match at 7-7 and later 8-8. Meanwhile, Stanford's No. 2 team of Mallory Burdette and Stacey Tan emerged with a 9-7 win after trailing 6-5 and 7-6. The doubles point was clinched when Veronica Li and Carolyn McVeigh charging ahead for an 8-6 victory after being tied at 5-5.

1-0 Stanford after winning the doubles point

  • Stanford is in control early on in singles. The Cardinal holds commanding leads on five of the six courts, with Lindsay Burdette, Mallory Burdette and Carolyn McVeigh holding 5-1 leads.

  • When a team wins a thrilling doubles point, the momentum carried into singles can be crucial. Stanford is riding that wave right now, cruising early on at every court with the exception of No. 4. Clemson needs to battle back quickly or singles might be over in almost the same amount of time it took to complete the doubles point.
