The field for the West Region Preliminary Rounds of the NCAA Track & Field Championships were released this afternoon, with a total of 29 Huskies making the cut for the three-day meet held in Austin, Texas on May 27-29. The West Prelims in Austin are the gateway all athletes must pass through to reach the NCAA Outdoor Championships held next month in Eugene, Oregon.

The old regional format of the past several years has been overhauled this season. Now there are just two 'regions', West and East with the athletes in the East competing at Greensboro, North Carolina. In each individual event there are 48 qualifiers at each preliminary round site, with 24 relay teams at each location. One or two rounds will be held at the two regional sites to whittle the field down to 12 individuals and relays who will move on to Eugene. Multi-events are the only events that will still qualify directly to Eugene based on top scores, and Husky sophomore Jeremy Taiwo will qualify in the decathlon.

The 21st-ranked Husky men earned 15 individual qualifiers plus one relay for what will likely be a total of 17 athletes in Austin, while the UW women qualified 12 athletes for the prelims though entries will not be set in stone until the start lists are released next Tuesday.

Seven Huskies are ranked in the top-10 in the West including senior Katie Follett (No. 1, 1,500m), junior Scott Roth (No. 3, pole vault), junior Kyle Nielsen (No. 4, javelin), freshman James Alaka (No. 5, 100m), senior Ryan Vu (No. 8, pole vault), senior Zack Midles (No. 9, hammer), and junior Brooke Pighin (No. 10, javelin).

Eight more Huskies are ranked between 11th and 20th in their events and will look to crack the top-12 in order to move on to Eugene. That list includes Alaka in the 200m, junior Colton Tully-Doyle in the 5k, senior Jake Schmitt in the 10k, freshman Joe Zimmerman in the javelin, senior Kailey Campbell at 1,500-meters, sophomore Mel Lawrence in the steeplechase, senior Anita Campbell in the 10k, and senior Falesha Ankton in the 100m hurdles.
