May 23, 2010
TUCSON--The University of Arizona and Brigham Young University, both 46-11 clubs fresh off NCAA Region titles, will square off in Tucson on Friday and Saturday, May 28-29, in Super Regional play of the NCAA Softball Championships.
The matchup includes a single game Friday, with a second and third game, if necessary, scheduled for Saturday in the best-of-three series. Times are to be announced Monday.
Arizona beat Hofstra in a game for the ages Sunday evening, 10-6, in 12 innings, capped by a two-run triple from K'Lee Arredondo and a grand slam from Lini Koria to come from behind in a game that had seven lead changes or ties. It gave UA a sweep of NCAA Region play at 3-0 after topping Cornell on Friday and Hofstra in the third game of the region Saturday.
BYU, meantime, took care of business in a big way, earning its first-ever Super Regional berth on the road at No. 12 Texas. The Cougars beat East Carolina 1-0 on Thursday, host Texas 9-8 on Friday and East Carolina again for the sweep, 8-3, on Saturday.
Game times in Tucson will be determined by the NCAA and its television partner ESPN, with all games in Super Regionals at eight sites to be shown live on the ESPN networks. UA has requested an evening first-pitch, but that brings no guarantee.
Tickets are available for online purchase this evening (Sunday) for a season ticket holder priority window through 5 p.m. Monday, with public all-session tickets available online beginning at 7 p.m. Monday.
The winners in Tucson and at the other seven sites for the Super Regionals will square off in Oklahoma City for the Women's College World Series beginning June 3.
