Recap | Final Stats

COLUMBUS, Ohio - After the No. 11-seeded California softball team defeated Ohio State, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon, Cal head coach Diane Ninemire and various student-athletes were available to chat with the local media.

Cal head coach Diane Ninemire
Opening statement:
'I thought it was a really great game. Valerie Arioto threw a great game today. She kept their batters off balance, which was a big factor for us today because we knew that they had some really big bats. Ohio State is a great hitting team. We knew that we had to keep ahead of the count to keep them off balance. Val did a great of keeping them off balance today. That allowed us to score runs and win the game today.'

On Cal shutting out its opponents at the Columbus Regional:
'We're very capable of doing that. Valerie and Jolene are really great pitchers. They're different but that really helps because we can throw some different things and match them up with the different kinds of batters our opponents have. We're very fortunate to have two great pitchers.'

On what the Bears' performance says about the Pac-10 Conference:
'The Pac-10 Conference is a great conference. It prepares you for the postseason every day. Every day, you go out and play against the top pitchers and players in the country. Sometimes, when you finish fourth or fifth in the conference, you feel like a loser. But in the meantime, you have to learn from those games, and that's what prepares you for moments like this. We're really fortunate to play in a great conference that gives us great competition day in and day out. I think our team has grown tremendously because of those experiences.'

Junior pitcher Valerie Arioto
On how the six-run cushion affected her pitching:
'It just helps me as a pitcher to relax a lot more. When you can play more relaxed, we play like we know how. Today, I thought our team had more energy than I had seen us have in awhile. It was a really good confidence boost heading into Super Regionals.'

On if the team getting more hits than they did against Kentucky:
'As Coach said, the Pac-10 has really prepared us for games like this and any team. Ohio State is a great team with big swingers. At any point, the game could have changed in an instant. I think scoring a lot of runs helped us play solid defense with confidence at the end of the game.'

Sophomore center fielder Frani Echavarria
On the team's performance:
'We played well defensively and offensively. We had the timely hits when we needed it and made all our plays. We were able to execute in both aspects of the game. Today felt really good, and helps us to stay focused for the games to come.'

Senior shortstop Taylor Kelly
On Cal shutting out its opponents at the Columbus Regional:
'I think it gave the teams we played and the upcoming team that we are playing that we are not going to let up. Our defense is going to be strong whether we are winning by one or we are winning by eight. Our defense has worked hard this year, and I think we have finally reached a confidence level that we can all appreciate. But that does not mean we are going to stop working to get better. There is always room for improvement.'

Senior designated player Vernae Sevilla
On team unity:
'I feel like our team chemistry is so much better than previous years. We are just all having fun together. I feel like we have always been well-rounded in terms of all of our skills. This season, we have just come together as a team in a better way than previous years as a team.'

Senior second baseman Shannon Thomas
On team chemistry:
'I think were all on the same page. We know where we want to go, and we know how to get there. Our team chemistry is phenomenal this year. We know what it takes to win so well do anything possible to keep that team chemistry work for us.'

Sophomore third baseman Jace Williams
On the team defense:
'Our defense played great! We really stepped it up and almost flawless defense this entire weekend. Hats off to Jolene and Valerie. This weekend is the best I have seen them pitch as a duo all year. Without them, we could not have had the outcome we did this weekend. Bravo, bravo!'
