Demitrius Omphroy Invited to Panama National Team Camp

May 25, 2010

BERKELEY - California midfielder Demtrius Omphroy earned an invitation to Panama's national team camp scheduled to take place from June 1-8 in Panama City, Panama. Panama coach Jorge Dely Valdes is looking to select the team he will lead to Mayagüez 2010, the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Sports Games, which will be held from July 17-Aug. 1 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.

Panama did not qualify for this summer's World Cup.

Omphroy, who completed his junior season last fall, was born in Alameda, Calif. His connection to los Canaleros, one of the nicknames for the Panama national team, comes via his paternal grandfather, who was born in the Central American nation.

The 5-10, 165-pound Omphroy has played for U.S. youth national teams at the under-15, under-16 and under-18 levels but has never played for the senior U.S. squad. He turns 21 on May 30.

'I have the opportunity, and I figured that regardless if I make or not, the experience of training with a national team is the type of experience I haven't gotten yet,' Omphroy said. 'This is just a training camp. If they select me, then I have a decision as to which country I want to play for. Until then, I still would rather push for this and do my best.'

In 2009, the East Bay product started 14 of the 18 games he played in and produced five points (1 goal, 3 assists) for the Golden Bears. He has played in 50 games for Cal and has earned Pac-10 All-Academic honorable mention twice in three seasons.

'This is a tremendous accomplishment for Demitrius and the Cal soccer program,' Cal head coach Kevin Grimes said. 'This is the highest honor a soccer player can achieve, to be called in to represent his country at the highest level. The current Cal players and fellow alumni are all very proud of Demit.'
