Live From The NCAA West Prelims
May 26, 2010
Wednesday, May 26 -- The Huskies got a full dosage of the Texas heat this afternoon, after Tuesday was deceptively mild. Temperatues were into the upper 80s as Washington headed back to Mike A. Myers Stadium for a shake-out at 4 p.m. Although there is not much shade to be found, the track facility does lie in the shadow of the Darrel K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium where the Longhorns take to the gridiron. The stadium seats just over 100,000 officially, or a few more than the number of entries in this week's meet. Actually that number is closer to 2,000, but still it is quite a field here in Austin with 48 athletes in every event, making for especially long days in the field events. Dodging the sun whenever possible will be helpful, a strange mindset for Huskies used to basking in it at every chance. Even late in the practice day, the track was packed with athletes doing strides in the infield, taking practice hurdle runs around the corners, and getting used to the breezes down the jump and vault pits. Returning to the hotel around 6 p.m., most Huskies headed for dinner and then into a team meeting at 8:30. First bus back to the track Thursday morning is at 10 a.m. with the three men's javelin throwers on the clock first for a 12 noon start.
