No. 14 Cougars Prepare for NCAA Rowing Championships

What's Happening This Week: Washington State's women's rowing team will compete at the NCAA Championships at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif., May 28-30...Division I racing begins at 8:45 a.m. Friday with the varsity eight heats...the NCAA Championships mark the third time this season the Cougars will compete at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center course on Lake Natoma.

The Field: WSU will compete against a field of 15 other NCAA Division I teams...Cougar varsity eight has defeated three of the 16 varsity eights that will compete for the national championship: Tennessee, Washington, and Wisconsin...WSU has competed against five other NCAA participants in California, UCLA, USC, Stanford and Virginia...the Cougars have faced California, UCLA, USC, Stanford and Washington twice.

Experience at the NCAA Championships: The Cougar line-ups feature 12 rowers with experience at the NCAA Championships...from the current varsity eight, Corina Chilibeck, Justine Galbraith, Kyann Martin, Irena Neffeova and Hannah Rothstrom all competed at the 2008 national championships... Erika Jorgensen, Christina Kinck, Erica Lewis and Natasha Ostopovich from the second varsity eight competed in 2008...the varsity four's Lauren Johnson, Sarah Powell and Katie Wollstein also competed in 2008.

WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere on the NCAA Championships: 'I felt like we had a strong season, but we maybe didn't finish quite as high as we would have liked to. In the back of my mind, I thought we'd done enough, but when we actually heard our name it was a big relief.'

'We haven't raced a lot of the other conferences, there have been a lot of schools we haven't even dealt with. Our goal is going to remain to be as fast as we possibly can. We can't speed anyone up and we can't slow anyone down, so we just have to do our thing.'

2010 Pac-10 Championships: Led by a fourth-place finish by the second varsity eight, WSU finished sixth at the Pac-10 Championships this season at Lake Natoma...the varsity eight and varsity four each placed sixth...novice eight placed fifth.

Pac-10 in the Rankings: Six of the seven Pacific-10 Conference rowing teams are ranked in the May 19, 2010 CRCA/U.S. Rowing Division Top-20 Poll ...the leaders are No. 3 California, No. 4 Stanford and No. 7 Washington...USC is ranked 10th, UCLA 13th and Washington State rounds out the league in 14th.

Previously at the NCAAs: The Cougars are making their fifth trip as a team to the NCAA Championships...their best finish came in 2006 as WSU placed fourth, led by a fourth-place finish from the varsity eight...WSU placed eighth in its last NCAA appearance in 2008, ninth in 2004 and 12th in 2003...WSU's varsity eight earned an at-large bid in 2002, placing 13th.
