Cats Hope To Fill It Up

The University of Arizona softball team expects solid crowds for its Friday-Saturday NCAA Super Regional against Brigham Young University, and single-day tickets go on sale tomorrow at 9 a.m. in the quest for a capacity audience.

Some 450 seats in Candrea's Corner -- the outfield stands beyond the left-center field fence -- remain at $10 per day. UA plays BYU at 4 p.m. Friday, with games two and three (if necessary) slated to begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.

UA athletics director Greg Byrne pointed out in his online blog this week an emphasis he's firmly behind -- putting lots of fans in the stands for home events. '...We have to be a legion of ambassadors' with jammed stadiums and arenas, he wrote.

Arizona averaged 2,220 fans for its 21 home dates this year, among the best in the nation. The Cats have been among national leaders since Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium was built for the 1993 season, leading nation eight different times. This year's figure is the second-best in the stadium's history behind the 2,458 attracted for games last year, which was the top per-game figure in the country.

The biggest crowd for an NCAA game, competition which occurs during the warm month of May, was 2,570 for the May 24, 2008, Super Regional UA played in Hillenbrand against Oklahoma. UA nearly hit that number last week against Hofstra in Friday night action during Regional play, drawing 2,557 fans.
