Guregian Named Pac-10 Athlete of the Year

May 27, 2010

BERKELEY - California men's rower senior Nareg Guregian was named the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year, as announced by the conference on Thursday. Three Golden Bears were also selected to the Pac-10 all-conference team.

Guregian has been a key piece of Cal's varsity 8+ boat all season, which earned him his first-career Pac-10 Men's Rowing Athlete of the Year honor. At the Pac-10 Championships, he helped the Bears finish second in the varsity 8+ race, leading to a second-place overall finish. The San Clemente, Calif., native also helped the second-ranked squad earn the Schwabacher Cup from rival Stanford in their annual dual meet when the varsity 8+ boat defeated the Cardinal by eight seconds. Guregian has also been selected to attend the U.S. U-23 camp this summer after bringing home a silver medal as a member of the U.S. Junior National team at the 2009 World Rowing Under-23 Championships last July.

The three Bears named to the all-conference team were Guregian, senior Sean Engel and junior Zachary Vlahos.

Cal next competes at the IRA Regatta from June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.
