May 27, 2010
Athens, Ga. - Bruin junior Noelle Hickey kept her hopes for a national title alive on Thursday, as she advanced to the round of 16 in singles at the NCAA Tennis Championships held at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Center.
Hickey beat Cal's Mari Andersson, 6-2, 6-3 in Thursday's second round. With Andersson serving at 3-4 in the second set, Hickey broke serve and then held at love to take the match. The win sets up a meeting with third-seeded Maria Sanchez of USC on Friday. It will mark the first meeting between the two players this year. Regardless of the outcome, Hickey will earn 2010 All-America honors in singles for reaching the round of 16.
Meanwhile, junior Andrea Remynse was knocked out of the singles tournament after suffering a 6-2, 6-3 loss to seventh-seeded Allie Will of Florida. Remynse returned to the court later in the day, teaming with Yasmin Schnack for a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Old Dominion's Joanna Dobrowolska and Nadine Fahoum in the first round.
In men's action, Haythem Abid was ousted from the singles tournament on Thursday, falling to Virginia's Michael Shabaz, 6-3, 6-4. UCLA's Amit Inbar and Nick Meister won their opening doubles match over Louisville's Alejandro Calligari and Simon Childs, 6-4, 6-2.
