O'Neill Named CRCA West Region Coach of the Year

BERKELEY - Two weeks after leading the California women's crew to its third straight Pac-10 title, head coach Dave O'Neill was recently named the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association's West Regional Head Coach of the Year as announced by the organization. Assistant coach Sarah Puddicombe was also named the CRCA West Regional Assistant Coach of the Year. In addition, five Golden Bears were named to the CRCA all-region team.
Senior Iva Obradovic, junior Mary Jeghers and freshman Kara Kohler were named to the first team, while senior Taryn O'Connell and freshman Chelsea Lucas were selected to the second team. Obradovic, Jeghers, Kohler and O'Connell all row on the varsity 8+ boat that is currently undefeated, including a victory over Stanford at the Pac-10 Championships on May 16 to clinch the team title for Cal.
In addition to making the all-region team, O'Connell was also one of four Bears to be named a CRCA scholar athlete. Joining her for this honor are Taylor Christensen, Bridget Moran and Avalon Radys. Criteria for this honor include that the student-athletes have a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher for her career (through the fall semester/quarter for the current competition year).
The Bears next compete in the NCAA Championships from May 28-30 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. For more information on the national meet, please click here.
