May 28, 2010

LOS ANGELES - The Washington baseball team got home runs from Chase Anselment, Pierce Rankin and Troy Scott as the Huskies beat USC, 9-7, Friday night at Dedeaux Field in the first game of a three-game, Pac-10 series.

USC slugger Rick Oropesa belted three homers for the Trojans, his 17th, 18th and 19th of the year, but the Trojans still fell short. Oropesa finished 4-for-5 with five runs batted in.

Washington improved to 28-26 on the season and 11-14 in Pac-10 play. USC fell to 26-32 overall and 5-20 in the conference.

UW junior lefty Adrian Gomez (4-1) pitched two and two-thirds innings for the victory. He gave up two runs on four hits. Jacob Clem worked the final two innings for the save, his sixth of the year.

USC starter Ben Mount (5-6) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits in his five innings.

The Trojans took the 1-0 lead in the first when Oropesa belted a two-out, solo homer, his 17th of the season.

The Huskies, however, rallied in the second. With two outs and none on, Scott singled, stole second and scored on a single from David Bentrott. Bentrott then stole second and scored on a base hit from Julien Pollard, putting the UW in front, 2-1.

In the third, Anselment, a freshman right fielder, blasted a one-out solo home run, his sixth of the season, to boost the lead to 3-1

USC came back to tie the game in the bottom of the third as RBI singles from Cade Kreuter and Adam Landecker knotted the game at 3-3.

That tie held until the fifth when the Huskies went deep twice more to move back in front. After Anselment walked, Rankin hit his 10th of the season to left. After a second out, Scott belted his seventh to make it a 6-3 Husky lead.

Washington added another two-out run in the sixth as Doug Cherry was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a single from Jacob Lamb.

USC cut the lead to 7-5 in the seventh when Oropesa went deep for a second time. This one was a two-out, two-run shot to right field.

In the ninth, Rankin tripled and scored on an RBI single from senior Max Kwan and pinch runner Andy Bethel came in on a single from Bradley Boyer.

Those runs proved vital as Oropesa hit his third of the ninth, a one-out, two-run shot to right-center, to cut the lead t 9-7.

Rankin finished the game with a homer and a triple in five at bats while Scott went 3-for-5 with the homer.

The Huskies and Trojans play again Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and wrap up the 2010 regular season Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. game.
