Juricova Advances to NCAA Singles Quarterfinal

May 28, 2010

ATHENS, Ga. - No. 2-ranked California women's tennis sophomore Jana Juricova became the first Golden Bear to advance to the NCAA singles championship quarterfinal since 2006. Juricova put together her 17th consecutive win as she defeated No. 13 Maria Mosolova of Northwestern, 6-3, 7-6, in the round of 16 of the 2010 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Singles Championship on Friday (May 28) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of host University of Georgia.

It was Juricova's third-career victory over Mosolova and extended her set-winning streak to 20. She turned a No. 1-ranked Mosolova away with a 6-4, 6-1 win at the top court during the 2009 NCAA team championship quarterfinal in their first meeting and earned a 6-3, 6-1 win in the semifinals of the ITA Team Indoor Championship on Feb. 14.

The last Cal player to advance to the singles quarterfinal was Susie Babos in 2006 when she went on to win the NCAA title. Juricova will face No. 20 Nina Secerbegovic of Baylor in the quarterfinal. Secerbegovic advanced by defeating No. 47 Ellah Nze of Duke, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1.

The match opened with each player holding serve to the tune of a three-all tie in the first set. Juricova attacked the net and went down the line to earn the first break of the match and go up, 4-3, in the seventh game. After holding her own serve, Juricova had Mosolova up against the ropes with two set points. Mosolova's next shot went long to surrender the first set, 6-3, to Juricova.

Mosolova made adjustments as the second set opened up and broke Juricova's serve to take a 1-0 lead out of the break. She then held serve to go in front, 2-0. The two traded games until Juricova fought off Mosolova's serve to break back and force a four-all tie. Four games later the score was tied once more at six games all. Juricova took the first point of the tiebreaker and went up, 3-1, early. Juricova seized match point for the first time with a 6-5 lead but had faced three more ties before she put two straight points together for a 10-8 win in the second-set tiebreaker for the match victory.

In the doubles championship, defending NCAA champions Juricova and junior Mari Andersson faced Miami's No. 6-ranked tandem of Gabriela Mejia and Laura Vallverdu in the round of 16. The ninth-ranked Bears stayed close with the Hurricanes but were edged for the first set, 7-5. Miami carried its momentum into the second set to earn a two-break advantage and a 5-2 lead as the Canes faced Andersson's serve. The Bears fought off a couple of match points but Miami prevailed with a 6-2 win in the second set to dethrone Cal's top doubles team. Andersson and Juricova complete the season with a 32-10 overall record; 21-3 in duals.
