Smit Back in Action, Third Twice at Friday's Speedo Challenge

IRVINE, Calif.-- Julia Smit, did not disappoint at the site of the 2010 Pan Pacific Championships, as the Honda Award finalist and NCAA Swimmer of the Year finished third in both the 200-meter individual medley and 50 freestyle at the Speedo Grand Challenge on Friday.

Fellow Cardinal, Liz Smith won the consolation finals of the 100-meter breaststroke as the Stanford women produced 15 women amongst the top-20 spots across four events.

Smit, who finished her eligibility in June, finished third in the 200 individual medley four-woman final, swimming 2:12.57 in the long course event as one five Stanford swimmers in the three, 20-person finals. USC's Katinka Hosszu won the event (2:11.12).

Smit also reached the finals in 50-meter freestyle, joining teammate Samantha Woodward for half of the four spots. Smit was third with a time of 25.56, while Woodward was fourth with a mark of 25.88. Betsy Webb (eighth) and Andi Murez (ninth) reached the consolation finals.

Smith was the first of three Cardinal, finishing fifth overall with a time of 1:11.08. Kerry Kraemer also reached the consolation “B” finals, finishing 11th (1:13.67). Bruce reached her second consolations finals, finishing 14th (1:14.11).

Fellow graduate and Honda finalist, Elaine Breeden led the consolation finals in the 200 IM, with a seventh place overall finish (2:16.07), followed by former teammates Smith (2:16.86) and Kate Dwelley (2:17.39). Jamie Bruce reached the “B” consolation finals, finishing 17th (2:22.43).

Natalie Durant closed out the first day of competition as one of three Cardinal in the consolation finals of the 400-meter freestyle. The British freshman swam 4:22.03 for 10th, ahead of veteran teammates, Dwelley (11th) and Angela Duckworth (12th)

The championships run through Sunday. Saturday and Sunday's prelims are at 9 a.m while the finals on Saturday is at 5 p.m and Sunday at 4 p.m. This championship event features a preliminary and finals round, placing swimmers in one of three finals, the top four and then two, eight person consolations.
