Cougar Baseball Evens Series with UCLA
May 29, 2010
LOS ANGELES - Washington State spotted UCLA a four-run lead before rallying for a 6-4 win in Pacific-10 Conference baseball at Jackie Robinson Stadium, Saturday.
With the victory, the No. 20 Cougars (34-19, 15-11 Pac-10) evened the three-game series with the No. 7 Bruins (42-13, 17-9 Pac-10). Coupled with Arizona State's win at Stanford, the Cougars clinched third place in the conference outright.
'Our bullpen was great, we battled and we just didn't give in,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'I am proud of our guys for playing good baseball and grinding out a win. This was a postseason type game.'
UCLA took a 4-0 lead against Cougar starter James Wise with four solo home runs. Brett Krill and Steve Rodriguez went back-to-back to open the third and Justin Uribe and Cody Regis did the same to begin the fourth.
The Cougars took the lead in the seventh with the help of the Bruins' defense. Cody Bartlett reached on a two-out error and stole second. Jones singled to plate Bartlett and cut the UCLA lead to 4-2. Fanelli singled to put runners at first and second and end Bauer's day. Matt Grace (0-1) induced a ground ball by Michael Weber that was misplayed for an error as Jones scored to make it a one-run game. Erik Goeddel came on in relief and walked Shea Vucinich to load the bases. Brett Jacobs followed with a single to score two runs and give WSU a 5-4 lead.
The Cougars' rally made a winner out of Seth Harvey (3-1) who pitched two and two-thirds innings of shutout relief without giving up a hit. Michael Weber added an insurance run in the ninth with his seventh home run of the season. Adam Conley pitched the ninth for his 11th save.
The series concludes, Sunday with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
