Cats Cap Regular Season With 3-1 Victory
May 30, 2010
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Arizona baseball team concluded the regular season with an impressive 3-1 victory over Oregon State on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
The Wildcats used four different pitchers, including Vincent Littlaman, who made his second career start, Nick Cunningham, who picked up the win, Stephen Manthei and Bryce Bandilla, who earned his first save of the year.
Steve Selsky delivered the key hit as his two-run home run in the sixth inning provided the winning margin, giving Arizona a 3-1 victory. UA’s bullpen kept the Beavers off the scoreboard over the final seven frames.
Arizona jumped out on top with a 1-0 lead after the first half inning of play, marking the first lead for the visitors in the series. A one-out double by Rafael Valenzuela was followed by Bandy’s RBI single to right field.
The Wildcats threatened to do more damage in the first after Selsky singled and Cole Frenzel walked to load the bases. But Robert Refsnyder grounded into an inning-ending double play, leaving a pair of runners on base.
The Beavers tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Smith doubled to right field with one out and advanced to third base on a groundout. Littleman was lifted in favor of Cunningham, who entered to face Adalberto Santos with two down.
However, Smith scored on a passed ball to tie the game. Santos singled to left field on pitch later, and Cunningham was able to get out of the inning with no further damage.
Cunningham worked out of a jam in the bottom of the third inning. After a pair of singles and then a two-out walk, the Beavers had the bases loaded. Cunningham fell behind OSU leadoff batter Tyler Smith, but Smith flew out to centerfield, stranding three runners on base.
Tyler Waldron relieved OSU starter Ryan Gorton to start the second inning. Waldron, who pitched in each of the first two games of the series, retired the first 11 hitters he faced, keeping the Wildcats off base in the third through fifth innings.
After striking out the first two batters in the sixth, Waldron’s streak – and the Beavers’ overall 14-consecutive outs against UA hitters – came to an end when Bandy singled to left field. Selsky followed with a two-run home run to left field to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead.
Manthei took the mound in the seventh and eighth innings for the Wildcats, pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three batters and allowed just one hit. He retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the eighth.
Bandilla earned his first save of the season as he replaced Manthei in the ninth inning. Bandilla turned away the Beavers in the ninth, getting a pair of groundouts to open the inning. After a two-out single by Smith, Bandilla struck out Jared Norris to end the game.
Littleman turned in 2.2 innings in his second start of the season. He allowed just two hits and one run, while issuing zero walks.
Arizona, which finishes the regular season with a 33-22 overall record, will return to Tucson this evening and then wait to find out whether its season will continue with postseason action. The 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship 64-team field, with first-round regional pairings and site assignments, will be revealed in a live, half-hour telecast on ESPN at 12:30 p.m. (ET), Monday, May 31.
