Hilary Barte, Lindsay Burdette To Play For NCAA Doubles Title Monday

May 30, 2010

ATHENS, Ga.- Stanford's top doubles team of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette will play for a title on Monday at 9 a.m. PT at the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships.

The nation's No. 2-ranked duo, Barte and Burdette will square off against the country's No. 1-ranked team of Natalie Pluskota and Caitlin Whoriskey from Tennessee. Pluskota and Whoriskey prevailed in a 6-1, 7-6 (11) victory over host Georgia's team of Nadja Gilchrist and Chelsey Gullickson in the semifinals on Sunday.

The path to Monday's final was much easier for Barte and Burdette, who defeated UCLA's Andrea Remynse and Yasmin Schnack 6-0, 6-1. The Pac-10 rivals were meeting up for the sixth time this year, with Stanford's duo of Barte and Burdette holding a 3-2 edge entering the afternoon.

Now Barte and Burdette will face another familiar foe in Pluskota and Whoriskey. The Lady Vols' duo picked up an 8-4 win in the first meeting during the second round of the ITA All-American Championships. But the Cardinal tandem rebounded with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (4) decision in the championship match of the ITA National Indoor Championships.

Barte and Burdette were in the same spot last year, reaching the national title match before falling 6-3, 6-4 to California's team of Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova.

Barte and Burdette are bidding to become Stanford's first NCAA Doubles champions since 2005, when Alice Barnes and Erin Burdette defeated Amber Liu and Anne Yelsey 6-3, 6-4 in an all-Stanford final. Five Cardinal doubles teams have been crowned NCAA champions, with victories coming in 1984 (Linda Gates, Elise Burgin), 1985 (Linda Gates, Leigh Anne Eldredge), 1990 (Meredith McGrath, Teri Whitlinger), 2002 (Lauren Kalvaria, Gabriela Lastra) and 2005 (Alice Barnes, Erin Burdette).

Meanwhile, Barte's impressive singles run came to an end on Sunday afternoon. Barte was defeated 7-6 (6), 6-3 by Georgia's Chelsey Gullickson in the semifinals after winning her first four matches.

Barte ends her season with 38 singles victories, and has now earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles for the third consecutive year.
