The No. 2-ranked California men's crew heads east to Camden, N.J., this week for the 2010 National Intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta from June 3-5. Bears Take Second at Pac-10 Championships
Coming in as the defending Pac-10 champions, Cal took second at the 2010 Pac-10 Championships on May 16 at Lake Natoma in Gold River, Calif. The Bears finished runner-up in all four races to Pac-10-champion No. 1 Washington.
In the varsity 8+, Cal held a slim lead over Washington after the first split, but the Huskies claimed the lead in the second split, and eventually pulled away for a 5:45.80-5:49.20 victory. Cal also led after the first split in the second varsity 8+, before Washington took the lead and never gave it up. Despite Cal making up some time after the third split, the Huskies still edged past the Bears to the finish line, 5:56.10-5:58.40.
Last Year At The IRA Regatta
Cal men's crew claimed second place in the varsity 8+ grand final and in the team standings, while the Bears' varsity 4+ won its grand final, at the 107th annual IRA Regatta last season. It marked the fourth time Cal has won the varsity 4+ IRA championship and the Eric W. Will Trophy; the Bears also won it in 2001, 2002 and 2007. Cal posted 178 points to finish second behind varsity 8+ champion Washington (198 points) for the Ten Eyck Trophy.
A Look At Cal Historically at the IRA Regatta
After winning it's last championship in 2006, Cal has won 15 IRA national championships, the second most behind Cornell (26). The Bears went on a roll in the early 2000's winning four straight titles from 1999-2002. The 1999 championship was the school's first in the varsity 8+ since 1976.
