Darkness Suspends NCAA Championships Second Round
June 2, 2010
OOLTEWAH, Tenn. - Second round play at the NCAA Championships was suspended due to darkness Wednesday evening leaving several teams to finish the second round Thursday morning. Sophomores Morten Madsen and Alex Moore carded 1-under 71's to lead the Beavers on the second day of play.
Thunder storms and a deluge of heavy rain in the afternoon forced a two-hour delay in the middle of OSU's round. The Beavers, were at 3-over for the tournament and sitting in 11th place at the time. Coming out of the delay OSU quickly put another pair of birdies on the board from Moore and Madsen to move the Orange and Black into a tie for seventh, its highest point during the tournament so far.
But the round turned into a rollercoaster with birdies followed by double bogeys followed again by birdies with no rhythm ever being established by the Beavers.
'Our four (golfers whose scores counted) put up 18 birdies today and that's a lot,' Watts said. 'So we know those birdie opportunities are out there. We just need to make sure we're not making double bogeys on top of them.'
Oregon State wrapped up the second round at 12-over with a team score of (295-293) 598, which leaves them 12 strokes out of eighth place - the cut line to reach match play later beginning Friday. Florida State continues to lead the tournament after posting a course record 9-under 279 in the morning wave.
Madsen was one of the Beavers on the rollercoaster Wednesday tallying six birdies during the round before heading to the clubhouse following back-to-back bogeys. Moore was slightly more steady with five birdies and 10 pars, and senior Diego Velasquez added five birdies to the effort.
While the Beavers were among the last groups to finish in the last rays of light, nine teams in the second wave will return to the course at 7 a.m. ET to finish their second round. Upon the official finish to the second round, the teams will be re-seeded and assigned tee times for final round action.
