Five Cougars Earn Pac-10 Academic Accolades

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Senior utility player Matt Fanelli and sophomore outfielder were selected to the 2010 Pacific-10 Baseball All-Academic First Team, Wednesday highlighting five Cougar student-athletes recognized for their efforts in the classroom.

Fanelli was named to the first team for the third-straight year. A native of Olympia, Wash., Fanelli has a 3.78 grade point average and is a psychology major. Claussen owns a 3.48 GPA and has an undeclared major. The Renton, Wash., native is in his first year of eligibility for the honor.

Junior left-handed pitcher Paris Shewey was named to the second team. The Redmond, Wash., native has a 3.30 GPA and is a hotel business management major.

Junior third baseman Matt Argyropoulos and redshirt-junior catcher Jay Ponciano received honorable mention.

The Cougars are making their second-straight appearance in the NCAA postseason, and play Kansas State, Friday at 7:05 p.m. Central/5:05 p.m. Pacific in the Fayetteville, Ark., Regional.
