June 2, 2010
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - University of Arizona women's golf coach Laura Ianello was honored by her conference colleagues by being selected the 2010 Pac-10 Women's Golf Coach of the Year as the league awards were announced on Wednesday afternoon by conference commissioner Larry Scott.
Ianello guided the Wildcats to their most successful season in a decade, leading the team to a trio of wins that included both the Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional titles. Arizona won three times in full on the campaign, breaking a seven season drought by capturing the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown last November. The Wildcats also posted a 5th place finish at the NCAA Championships, the program's best showing since winning the 2000 title.
Freshman Sherlyn Popelka gave the Wildcats their first individual title since the 2008 campaign as she won the same event. Popelka was one of three Arizona golfers to earn all-America honors on Wednesday when GolfWeek Magazine released its postseason awards list. Sophomore Margarita Ramos was a 2nd-team honoree while bothPopelka and sophomore Isabelle Boineau were honorable mention selections.
Ramos was the top-rated player on the season for the Wildcats, ending up #17 in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index, a statistical breakdown of all collegiate players. She finished tied for 7th at the NCAA Championships and completed the season with five top 10 finishes, two top 20 places and a team-best scoring average of 73.14.
Boineau and Popelka had near identical numbers for 2009-10, tallying scoring averages of 73.79 and 73.81, respectively. The duo combined for five top 10 spots and seven top 20 finishes to go along with a combined 15 rounds at par or better.
