Cal Advances Five boats to Friday Semifinals at IRA Regatta

June 3, 2010

CAMDEN, N.J. - California qualified all five boats for Friday's semifinal rounds at the opening day of the 108th annual IRA Regatta on Thursday on Cooper River. The Golden Bears' varsity 8+ advanced out of the first heat with the second-best time (5:31.94) to defeat five teams, including second-place Yale (5:33.98). Cal's second varsity 8+ and novice 8+ boats also won their respective heats. The Bears' other boats - the varsity 4+ and the open 4+ - each placed second in their heats.

'We had a pretty good day, but it's still just the heats,' head coach Mike Teti said. 'The races are going to get tighter, but we feel good about today's performances. We'll see how we do tomorrow. We have a strong team. All of our boats did well today, and I think it shows the strength of our program.'

Cal's varsity 8+ time of 5:31.94 was a season-best for the Bears. The semifinal rounds are slated for a 9:15 a.m. (PT) start on Friday. The varsity 8+ placed second in last year's grand final. The Bears will face top-ranked and 2010 Pac-10 champion Washington in their semifinal race on Friday.

'They (varsity 8+) had been getting better in the past week and a half,' Teti said. 'We were able to get some good training in once finals ended. We wanted to win this heat to put us in a better position for the semifinals. It's kind of funny we're facing Washington in the semis, but there really aren't any weak teams at this point. They're all strong crews from here on out. We can't think beyond that tomorrow. We just have to get in to the top three.'

The Bears' second varsity 8+ posted a time of 5:42.87, the second-best time of the morning, to win its five-team heat, which included second-place Wisconsin (5:47.44). Friday's semifinals are scheduled for 8:45 a.m. (PT).

Cal also topped Princeton in its novice 4+ heat, 5:40.96-5:44.08. The time just missed being the best overall time out of the heats. Washington took the top time, 5:40.82, in its heat.

Cal's varsity 4+, the defending IRA champion, took second to Stanford in its heat, 6:22.12-6:23.88, in Cal's other second-place finish on Thursday. The varsity 4+ semifinals are slated for 7 a.m. (PT) on Friday.

The open 4+ battled Cornell in the first heat of their event, but Cornell earned the decisive victory over the second-place Bears, 6:22.64-6:28.79.

The IRA Regatta continues on Friday and concludes on Saturday.
