Bauer Pitches No. 1-Seed UCLA Past No. 4-Seed LSU, 6-3, in NCAA Regionals

LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Trevor Bauer recorded 11 strikeouts in eight-plus inning to earn the win and lead the No. 1-seed UCLA baseball team past No. 4-seed LSU, 6-3, and remain in the winners' bracket of the NCAA Los Angeles Regional before 2,613 at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday night.
Bauer (10-3) joined teammate Gerrit Cole as UCLA's two 10-game winners, leading the Bruins into an NCAA Regional final for the third season in the last four years. Bauer limited LSU (41-21) to three runs (one earned) and seven hits, pitching into the ninth inning. He held the Tigers to five hits and no runs through the first eight frames.
The Bruins (45-13) tied the program record for most wins in one season, equaling the win total from the Bruins' 1997 team (45-19-1), the last UCLA program to advance to the College World Series.
UCLA received solo home runs from third baseman Cody Regis, left fielder Jeff Gelalich and pinch-hitter Dean Espy in the victory over LSU. Espy went 2-for-2 with two RBI, and Regis went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Gelalich went 2-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.
LSU right-hander Anthony Ranaudo (5-3) was tagged with the loss, surrendering four runs and seven hits in six innings. Ranaudo registered 10 strikeouts and issued four walks.
UCLA led 1-0 in the second inning on a solo homer by Regis. The Bruins added their second run in the top of the third. After loading the bases on back-to-back singles and a walk, Regis drew a bases loaded walk to score catcher Steve Rodriguez.
Gelalich delivered his first collegiate homer in the top of the fourth, a blast beyond the right-center field fence to send UCLA ahead by a 3-0 margin.
The Bruins led off the sixth inning with a walk from Gelalich, who stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Gelalich scored on a two-out double to the left field fence by Amaral.
Espy added to the Bruins' margin in the top of the seventh inning with a pinch-hit homer to deep left field.
UCLA scored one more run in the top of the ninth inning with an RBI-single by Espy, scoring Amaral from third.
LSU scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth on a dropped fly ball before shortstop Austin Nola and center fielder Leon Landry belted back-to-back RBI-doubles with nobody out. A sacrifice fly with one out scored Landry.
The Bruins will play the winner of Sunday's elimination contest between LSU and UC Irvine at 6 p.m. Sunday's NCAA Los Angeles Regional games will be televised by CST (Cox Sports Television) and will feature a live video stream on ESPN3.com.
Game Notes: UCLA's 26 home victories are the most since the Bruins went 28-10 in 1982 ... the Bruins tied the school record for most wins in a season (45), which has only been previously accomplished by the 1997 team ...Trevor Bauer pushed his strikeout total to 135, tops in the Pac-10 Conference ... Bauer lowered his ERA to a 2.72 mark ... UCLA closer Dan Klein required just four pitches to record the final three outs in the ninth inning in a non-save situation ... the Bruins lowered their team ERA to a 2.95 mark.
