FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Drew Smyly pitched seven innings for a victory and No. 15 Arkansas defeated No. 23 Washington State 6-4 in a winners' bracket game at the NCAA Baseball Fayetteville Regional, Saturday. Smyly (9-1) struck out seven and limited the Cougars to three hits and threw 72 of 119 pitches for strikes.

'It was a great environment for college baseball and the fans got their money's worth,' WSU Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. 'We dug ourselves a hole and had a chance that we didn't cash in on in the eighth.'

The Razorbacks (42-18) scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-0 lead against Washington State (35-21) starter Adam Conley (5-4).

In the sixth, Kyle Johnson walked with one out and Cody Bartlett followed with a home run to left field that hit off the top of the wall and bounced into the Cougar bullpen. It was Bartlett's second round tripper of the regional and cut the Razorbacks' lead to 4-2.

Zach Cox homered to lead off the Arkansas seventh, but Michael Weber answered with a home run to open the Cougars' half of the frame.

In the eighth, Garry Kuykendall bunted for a hit to open the inning against Arkansas's closer D.J. Baxendale. Patrick Claussen followed with a pinch hit single and Bartlett singled to load the bases. Baxendale was lifted in favor of Geoffrey Davenport who promptly walked Derek Jones on four pitches to force in a run and bring the Cougars within 5-4.

Jordan Pratt was summoned out of the Razorbacks' bullpen to face WSU cleanup hitter Matt Fanelli. He retired Fanelli on an infield fly, struck out Weber and got Shea Vucinich on a fly ball to end the threat.

In the ninth, Collin Kuhn homered to give Arkansas a 6-4 advantage. Ryan Peterson led off the bottom of the inning with a pinch hit double to bring the tying run to the plate. However, Pratt set down the next three hitters for his second save of the season.
