Harvey Named West Coach of the Year
June 5, 2010
TUCSON – The University of Arizona track and field team tacked on another coaching award Friday as the United States and named head coach Fred Harvey as the women’s coach of the year for the West Region on Friday morning.
The USTFCCCA released their annual list Friday, giving Harvey his second recognition of the season after being named the Mount Pacific Sports Federation women’s coach of the year after the indoor season.
The most recent honor came as a result of Harvey’s ability to bring the women back to prominence on the national scene. They are currently ranked 15th in the country by the USTFCCCA heading into thein Eugene, Ore., next week where they will be represented by eight women and one relay team – their most active national roster in years.
Just a year removed from a disappointing eighth place finish at the conference championships, Harvey has led a turnaround of the women’s squad that saw the team finish as the runner-up at this year’s Pacific-10 Conference Championships in Berkeley, Calif. This matched their best finish at the meet ever and was the first time the team had cracked the top five since 1997.
Of the ten total athletes on their way to nationals next week, all but two are either freshman or sophomores, exemplifying the work that Harvey has done in bringing the best possible recruits to the program and represents a very solid foundation to build upon.
The women will look to post their best national finish in years next week in Oregon. Events at the NCAA Championships will beginat in Eugene.
