Three Cats Earn All-Academic Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Three members of the Arizona men’s tennis were named to the Pacific-10 All-Academic teams announced today by Commissioner Larry Scott.  


Senior Ravid Hazi was named to the first team for the second consecutive year. The Rishon LeZion, Israel native compiled an impressive 3.51 GPA in Finance this year.  This season he competed primarily in the No. 6 position in single’s action where he compiled a 7-5 record and was 3-1 when playing in position No. 5.  Hazi had a six-single’s match winning streak, the longest of the season that started against Santa Clara and ended against then-No.16 California.  The senior compiled an overall 10-7 single’s record.    


Junior Andres Carrasco and sophomore Jason Zafiros earned honorable mention selections for their dedication in the classroom.  Carrasco is a Communication major while Zafiros is majoring in Business.


Carrasco, a native of Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native compiled a 13-7 overall singles record and tied Jason Zafiros for most wins on the season with 13. Carrasco had a four-single's match winning streak that started against New Mexico State and ended with Texas Tech.  After he dropped the fifth match, Carrasco won his next two matches against Denver and Santa Clara to win six of seven of his matches.


Zafiros, compiled a 13-9 overall singles record after starting the 2010 season with five of six singles wins.  The Bradenton, Fla. native tied Andres Carrasco with most wins on the season with 13.  In single’s competed in position No. 1 (1-1), No. 2 (3-2), No. 3 (5-2) and No. 4 (4-4).  He had a five-single’s match winning streak that started against San Diego and ended against then-No. 16 ranked California. 


To be eligible for selection to the academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
