Tuesday Marks Historic Draft Day For Oregon State Baseball

June 8, 2010

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Just a day after returning from its trip to Gainesville, Fla., the Oregon State baseball team experienced quite the busy Tuesday. Eight current Beavers were selected on the second day of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, just one off the school record of nine set in 2006.

Additionally, six Oregon State signees were selected by professional clubs, bringing that total to seven after outfielder/pitcher Drew Vettleson was selected by Tampa Bay 42nd overall on Monday.

Six of Oregon State’s eight selections on Tuesday – all pitchers - were taken in the top 10 rounds of the draft, setting a school record in the process. The Beavers previous record for top-10 selections was 2007 when five Beavers were selected by MLB clubs in the first nine rounds of the draft.

Additionally, each of those six pitchers saw their draft status improved from past years. Tyler Waldron was the first Beaver taken, going to Pittsburgh in the fifth round. Waldron had previously been drafted in the 32nd round in 2007 by Florida.

Greg Peavey was taken by the New York Mets in the sixth round, improving his draft stock from the 32nd round in 2009 (Houston) and 24th round in 2007 (New York Yankees). Kraig Sitton was taken in the seventh round by Colorado, jumping him up 10 rounds from 2009 (17th round to Boston).

Josh Osich was taken just four spots behind Sitton, going to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Tuesday’s selection is the first of his career.

Rounding out the top 10 included OSU pitchers Tanner Robles and Kevin Rhoderick, who went to the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs, respectively, within three selections of each other in the eighth round. Robles was previously taken by the Angels in the 14th round in 2007, while Rhoderick went to the Detroit Tigers in the 18th round that same year.

Stefen Romero was selected for the first time in his career Tuesday, getting taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 12th round. He was followed 10 rounds later by outfielder Adalberto Santos, who joined Waldron with the Pirates by going in the 22nd round. It was the third time in Santos’ career that he went in the draft after being selected by Toronto in 2007 (17th round) and San Diego last year (35th round).

OSU also saw five signees taken in the first 30 rounds Tuesday. They include: pitcher Ian Kendall (fifth round - Tampa Bay), infielder Jake Rodriguez (11th round – Angels), infielder Brandon Drury (13th round – Atlanta), pitcher Ben Wetzler (15th round – Cleveland) and pitcher Adam Duke (16th round – Boston).

Including Monday’s Tampa Bay selection of Vettleson, the Beavers saw 15 players with current or future ties to the program selected by MLB clubs.

The 2006 draft saw the Beavers have nine players selected overall, including seven players in the top 30 rounds. Oregon State can see that record broken with additional selections on Wednesday.

The 2007 draft also saw eight Oregon State selections, but again, that included the entire draft. That year, six student-athletes were taken in the top 30 rounds.

Additionally, the six Oregon State pitchers selected Tuesday is a single-draft record. The Beavers have twice had five chosen – in 2004 and 2007.

Oregon State has now had at least one player selected in the MLB Draft over the last 18 years, dating back to 1993.

The draft continues with rounds 31-50 on Wednesday. Included below is a complete list of Oregon State players who have been selected by Major League clubs thus far.
