Bishop to Compete at NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday
June 9, 2010
Corvallis, Ore. – Football student-athlete Jordan Bishop will represent Oregon State at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 9-12, held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene, Ore.
“Jordan [Bishop] has had some great practices leading up to this Friday,” head track and field coach Kelly Sullivan said. “Along with his ability and competitive spirit, it is going to be fun to see what he can do. I wouldn’t put anything past him at all.”
Bishop will be competing in the high jump, which will take place on Friday, June 11 at 3:30 p.m. He is the first male to compete for the Beavers since 1988, when Karl Van Calcar won the steeplechase. Ironically the national meet was held in Eugene as well.
After nearly four hours in extreme heat, Bishop claimed the 12th and final qualifying spot in the high jump at the West Regional in a jump-off with teammate Obum Gwacham. Bishop cleared 7-00.25 to earn the final spot after originally jumping 6-11.00. His 7-00.25 clearing jump ties for the sixth highest in school history, while Gwacham’s 6-11.00 is 10th all-time.
“It has been a very historical year in that Oregon State has been represented by both women and men in track and field for the first time since 1988,” Sullivan said. “Then to have it all climax this Friday with Jordan [Bishop] competing at Oregon in the high jump, an event synonymous with Oregon State track and field history, on the same track that the last male or female competed in uniform at the NCAA’s is a pretty special end to a fantastic year all the way around.”
