Incoming Freshman Dwight Powell Earns IMG Basketball Academy Accolades
June 11, 2010
STANFORD, Calif.- Incoming freshman Dwight Powell was recently named MVP and Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the IMG Basketball Academy, adding to his list of summer accolades.
Powell averaged 23.2 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.3 blocks per game this past season. Ranked as a top-five center in the 2010 class by ESPNU, he was selected to compete at the Derby Festival Classic in Louisville.
The IMG Basketball Academy honors follow an impressive showing at the second annual High School Academic All-American Classic last month in Azusa, Calif. Joining fellow incoming freshmen Anthony Brown and Josh Huestis at the event, Powell led the National All-Stars to a 136-133 victory over the American All-Stars. Powell contributed 17 points on 8-13 shooting and grabbed six boards while earning recognition as the Academic Player of the Year.
Last summer, Powell was selected to the Amare Stoudemire Skills Academy and LeBron James Skills Academy while playing in the adidas Nations Tournament with his AAU team, Grassroots Canada. Powell has also trained with the Canadian National Team.
Stanford's 2010-11 recruiting class of Aaron Bright, Anthony Brown, John Gage, Josh Huestis, Powell and Stefan Nastic is currently ranked among the top-20 in the country by several sites (No. 15 by Scout.com, No. 16 by Rivals.com and No. 18 by ESPN.com).
